why do we ride, we all know it's the freedom, the control, the single aspect of sitting on a powerfull machine taking us around winding roads and hair raising straightaways. but what happens when we escape to the rural areas and God forbid
we have an accident.Iv'e been riding for 40 years
and only layed it down once with minor discomfort
and damage to my ride. My son has been riding for 30 years and started with dirt bikes and worked his way up to hd cruisers. He lives in Raton nm on the nm and colorado border, it's a small town where he is a cot for century link. I had a 69 xlch when he was 15 and he constantly asked me to ride it and I use to say when you can kick start it you can ride it ( never set the mag at the proper place.) It's beautifull mountain riding at his door step, not like most of us who need to go 40 to50 miles to reach. On april of 2010 he was coming home on his panhead
( he has 4 harleys) and a women existing a bar crossed 3 lanes and hit him. he was seriouly injured including 2 broken wrist, fractured pelvis, and numerous bruises. He was treated at the local hospital and sent home. he is a member of the Brotherhood MC Riders and immediately 7 to 8 riders came to his aid. He was urinating blood and passing in and out, so his buddies called an ambulance and rushed him to St. josephs hosp in Santa Fe NM 160 miles away.My Son is as i am a veteran, he was a Cobra Crew chief and pilot, he is a strong guy and was bearing the pain like a true solder. As a father that is the one call we dread, when I got the call, I live in Albuq. 255 miles away, the first thing I said was, how bad. this is the toper, the doctor who treated him called the next day and said " i schould have not let him go home , but I was tired because I worked a 12 hour day. I called a friend Dr. Ed file a ortherpetic surgeon and former Dr. for the chicago bears and asked him to operate on my Son.Dr. file called dr. cho and requested he do it. What Im coming to is that when we escape to the mountains, what is the case if anything happens that the facilities are there to treat us. My son has since fully recovered and still riding. this accident made me think when I ride in the mountains to think a little more of my surroundings and ride a little easier and make sure I know where I am and always ride with my partner, carry a cell phone, watch for road markers, and be aware of where i am.

    Only Motorcycle Magazine I Buy

    By Demanding

    from Boise, ID

I've read them all and now subscribe only to American Iron. They are the best for old or new Harleys. I learn from their tech and how to, enjoy the customs and dig the old iron too. No fluff, real stuff! Thanks AIM for the best in the biz.

    For the American Biker Enthusiast

    By angrybulldog

    from Redmond, WA

American Iron magazine is my new Sports Illustrated. When I was a boy I used to grab the latest SI, thumb through it cover to cover first for the pictures or the easy to read stories. Then later I'd rip out all the pictures and paste 'em all over my wall. That's what American Iron feels like today. I get a ton of magazines, but this is like the fudge on top of the ice cream--I save it and savor it--after I've given it a good peak inside. They feature some great accessory ideas, some cool tips and tricks, and always some great feature stories, either about must-do road-trips, must-have items for riding, or most interestingly to me, inspiring ideas about how to trick out my bike further, or what bike to keep an eye out for down the road. Definitely a fun, easy read, full of bright lights and shiny objects.
