About Highlights

A childhood favorite for more than 60 years, Highlights encourages children to learn, play, and just be a kid.

While the jokes, riddles, and crafts are popular features, other kid-favorite sections in the magazine include: "Ask Arizona," an advice column for kids, about kids that depicts real-life experiences; "Hidden Pictures," a puzzle that tests observation as the goal is to find smaller hidden pictures within a larger one; "Goofus & Gallant," a comic strip featuring the contrasting actions of the two title characters with the intent of teaching children basic social skills; "The Timbertoes," another comic strip about a family who are depicted as being constructed from wood; "Your Own Pages," a collection of drawings, poems, and stories submitted by Highlights readers that are chosen to appear in the magazine; "What's Wrong?," similar to "Hidden Pictures," this one instructs children to locate the out-of-place objects in a scene; and "Brain Play," a list of simple questions that encourages children to apply their brain power.

Children who enjoy the fun of learning would look forward to receiving Highlights magazine as a gift subscription each month!

I did not grow up in the US, so I had never heard of this magazine until a year ago when I picked up several of them at a yard sale. I was so impressed I knew I would want a subsribtion for my future child. Now I am expecting and I am going to subsribe to it in advance. I am really looking forward to read it with my son. The magazine is full of good educational articles that also build a good character, teach manners, etc. It's very refreshing to see such wholesome material. It reminds me of the magazines I read as a kid growing up in Eastern Europe. The big plus of this publication is that it's age appropriate which is especially important nowadays when you see little kids exposed to adult stuff. Personally I want my child to have a normal childhood without the everpresent pop-icons, rap and movie stars.

My kids fight over who is going to do the hiddens objects first. This is a great gift. Would not recommend unless they are readers.

my mother subscribed to this for me when i was a child. I enjoyed every page; from the articles to the activity sheets, loved the jokes and riddles. Now I have a son who is in the 1st grade but is reading on a 2nd grade level. I just had no idea how much it cost. Now that the price has went down, I feel confident to buy and know that my "baby" will appreciate it and have fun (without knowing hes learning)!

        What my kids think...

        By Sly

        from Central Valley California

The above con is very minor but it does make all the material a bit difficult to match up. However, it is an opportunity to display in an interactive way with a little forethought. My girls learn a lot and these materials guide us to teach our girls in a way we might not do and touch on subjects we might neglect.

        great purchase

        By brownbit

        from New York City

I enjoyed Highlights for Children magazine when I was a child and now I can relive the fun with my three children---20, 8, 6. The Hidden Pictures activity is one of their favorites. This is a great magazine for children 5-12.

        Highlights Magazine Video Review

        Video Transcript

        I’m Nikki from Magazines.com.

Want your kid to have a break from his precious screen time but bypass the wails of boredom, and pestering his brother? Look no further than Highlights magazine. You remember it, right? That great activity magazine you got to work through when all your schoolwork was done. I know I went looking for it not to long ago for my kids, and I’m so glad I can introduce my guys to such a goldmine of entertainment!

Do yourself a favor. Your kids will be so consumed with Highlights’ puzzles and games that they probably won’t even realize it’s learning wrapped in fun – that they can do themselves!, Shh… That’s the sound of peace and quiet in your home. Aside from all the fun that Highlights has delivered for generations, your kids will be also exposed to features on other kids from around the world. But perhaps the very best part of the kids’ magazine is its annual “State of the Kid Report,” which surveys kids on topics like bullying and , what they believe worries their parents, and even gender roles.

A magazine that makes your kids more aware of the world surrounding them AND gives you back some sanity is a win-win for everyone. Thanks for checking out my review of Highlights magazine and the current subscription discounts and offers on this great title from Magazines.com.
