Okay

I always looked forward to getting it in the mail. I liked the animal stories. But they should make the magazine longer.

This magazine does not resemble its parent magazine except for the occasional picture or pictures of animals. It is almost all ads, even the main article usually reviews the latest kids movie. The ads are flashy. There really are no educational articles; just silly animal pictures with goofy captions, the occasional odd facts, Stump your parents, maybe a word find puzzle. If you want something with which to educate while entertaining your children with worthwhile activities and such, look for other magazines. A previous reviewer has some good ideas for kids magazines. Or if you want the geographical, historical, anthropological aspects of National Geographic magazine, I would suggest just subscribing to the original "National Geographic" magazine. Censor it yourself if that is why you are looking at this kiddie magazine option. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on "National Geographic Kids", there are far better and worthier options that deserve our support.

Great magazine for lower elementary kids or upper elementary kids who struggle with reading. Most kids enjoy reading and learning about animals so this is another plus.

I like this magazine as I am always looking to do things with my son. This allows us to sit and look at something and then plan to see the same things at the zoo or aquirium

    National Geographic Kids

Hey there! I’m Kara Gause, a former English teacher-turned-blogger.

The first time I realized there was such a thing as National Geographic Kids was as a middle school English teacher. We were trying to find something entertaining for kids who are reluctant readers.

And kids really do love it. There are tons of photographs and fun facts to go with them. Take “20 Cool Things about Water.” Yes, I want my kids to know a hippopotamus can walk all the way at the bottom of a lake or river, but I also want them to learn things that directly affect them. Like how cold water weighs more than hot water, and how a bath uses 75% more water than a five-minute shower. My father always told me I was wasting water, but now I’m armed with the facts for my kids!

That’s what’s really fun about a National Geographic Kids magazine subscription. If you’re humble enough to admit you have a lot to learn, you can learn it the second time around with your kid. It just gives one amazing fact and tidbit after another.

As a teacher, I also loved how it supported reading and comprehension skills with word games and puzzles—all grounded in science and geography. It’s like Boys’ Life magazine in that way, giving snippets of facts. Just enough to engage a kid and get them interested. But the real goal is to get them off their duffs to do some research and reading on their own. It’s sneaky that way.
