Additional Information

About Mental Floss

First published in 2001, Mental Floss bills itself as a liberal arts education packaged in each bimonthly issue. With an engaging mix of longer features and plenty of shorter quotes, trivia, and quizzes, Mental Floss is a cheat sheet to a complete education.

Content in the magazine is organized not in the typical "Table of Contents" but as "The Index," which it describes as a highly alphabetized guide. Regular features in every issue include: "Scatterbrained," trivia, facts, and anecdotes about an everyday topic or item; "Be Amazing!," a section of short articles and interviews; "Left_Brain/Right_Brain," a mix of science and logic versus art and literature; "Go Mental," a collection of pieces about religion, art, history, and world culture; "The Quiz," a brief quiz that appears at the back of the magazine.

During the year, Mental Floss publishes a special edition called "The Ten Issue," which features a list of ten things about an interesting subject.

Anyone who appreciates an entertaining take on education would love a subscription to Mental Floss magazine!

I became addicted to Mental Floss short articles online. I love the fun, quirky fact pieces so much that I decided to support their print mag. Every edition is full of science, history, and pop culture facts - plus the articles are generally short enough that you can relax for 10 minutes in between kid dropoff/pickup/activities and finish a few. You get smarter while you wait! My oldest child is 8, and we always found several things in Mental Floss that were appropriate and relevant to her studies in school, as well. She loves fun facts as much as I do, and I genuinely enjoyed sharing Mental Floss with her.

Favorite Magazine to Read

By KSReader

from Topeka, Kansas

I originally read my first Mental Floss magazine after checking it out from the local library. Couldn't put it down, it was so much fun to read. The writers introduce new and interesting facts with witty and clever stories. I have gained so much knowledge just from reading this magazine. It is appropriate for older kids that can understand the vocabulary. I haven't ever found anything that is offensive, but if you were concerned the magazine is a quick read to proof prior to letting your children read the articles. It really is a great source if you write speeches or need a topic to write a report about for school. My husband and I have been subscribing for 2 years and fight when the new issue arrives.

Mental Floss magazine

By MartintheMartian

Mental Floss magazine is simply the best title out there for the random knowledge junkies and 'Jeopardy' freaks among us. Nowhere else can you find such riveting yet useless info. Be wary of bathroom reading, your legs may fall asleep. Uncle John has nothing on this magazine. Clean between your cerebral cortex with Mental Floss!

Great even for short attention spans

By Jo

from Los Angeles

Mental Floss magazine is a great magazine. It is very fun and easy to read. It's impossible to read an issue without learning something surprising, amazing or bizarre. I love when I find this in my mailbox, I only wish there were more of them!

Encapsulated Learnedness

By zizou

from Sinking Spring PA

The ad write up on Mental Floss sounded great but I was slightly skeptical. Also, considering how much information is on the Internet I wondered if this would just be repetitious. However, there is information in Mental Floss that I would definitely never have found on my own, simply because I would not have known it was out there to be found. The staff does the work for you- finding articles of interest and snippets of information that are useful and stimulating or just entertaining!
