About Essence Magazine

Essence magazine is an inspirational magazine for African-American women that encourages them to lead bold, fulfilling lives.

First published in 1970 as primarily a fashion magazine, Essence has evolved to cover beauty tips, lifestyle topics, relationship advice, and social issues in the African-American community. Now each issue is considered monthly celebration of the African-American woman's experience, dedicated to encouraging her passions and dreams. Magazine covers feature celebrities, occasionally men, but most often black women.

Aside from the features in every issue, content in the magazine is organized in these sections: "Style," "Beauty&Hair," "News&Culture," "Sex&Love," "Work&Wealth," and "Body&Spirit." Regular features within these sections include: "Style Hunters," searching out the must-follow trends; "Street Style," reader-submitted photos of women rocking the latest looks; "Books," a monthly book recommendation; "10 Things We're Talking About," a run-down of 10 hot topics; "Single Man of the Month," a profile of one featured single man; and "Career News," how to navigate common pitfalls at the office.

Throughout the year, Essence may produce several special issues, such as the "Body Issue," the "Men's Issue," the "Readers' Issue," and others dedicated to seasonal fashion previews, the annual Black Beauty Awards, and annual Women of the Year.

Women looking for inspirational advice, along with beauty and fashion tips, will find a well-rounded read in a subscription to Essence magazine!!
