Recent changes for the worse on November 11, 2009 by Dissapointed long time reader from Woodinville, WA

  • Pros: Outstanding writers, most articles are fun to read
  • Cons: Ad HEAVY recently, editorials lack substance

I have been a subscriber of Car and Driver for over 10 years. Up until about 6 months ago, I was still thrilled to get my copy every month. There is a new managing editor, Eddie Alterman, and I am not a fan. Brock Yates and Csaba Csere have both retired and there are some new pens that just don't have the same flare and panache. The ad pages have tripled too. (There is a 5 page section in the back filled with male enhancement ads). There are also new types of articles that talk about things such as, 'how to shift a semi truck' and 'jump a Subaru'. Why? I would rather see more details and pictures about the cars they are reviewing than filler pages given to rookie writers. On the positive side, the main staff writers are still putting out great, fun to read articles about the cars that we want to hear about. I just want more of THAT and less of David E Davis Jr...the rambling old man who writes about an old friend that he heard from recently who reminded him of a race he once entered...with no other point to the story. Besides all those things, you can read any article in the magazine(that you paid for) online just a few weeks later for free. It's just not the GREAT magazine it once was. I am going to give Automobile a try this year.

Same Old, Same Old on July 13, 2009 by Jagster from Western Kentucky

  • Pros: Good writing, very opinionated unlike the other rags
  • Cons: not enough of the stuff enthusiasts like to read

Car and Driver started out as an enthusiast's magazine and has morphed into just another slick, coffee table/doctor's office puff magazine, filled with ads on penile size and car mats. There are some political rants just to prove that real people still write articles about the car industry and governmental meddling, but the same content could be used and reprinted in Automobile and Road and Track. I subscribed to all three again in recent months at give-away prices, just to see what has changed. Same old, same old. Sorry, but I will leave again, this time for good.

Great for Sports Car Enthusiasts on October 13, 2008 by cptmox from Chicago, IL.

  • Pros: Entertaining, smart, and witty write ups about today's autos, focusing on cars with sporting pretenses.
  • Cons: Not a buyer's resource for purchasing a mainstream auto; like most car mags, they're skewed toward exotic sportscars.

They have a strong bias toward quick-handling cars that are better suited to sprited drives down a twisting backroad than every day commuting. In comparison tests, rest assured the vehicle with the best handling and liveliest engine will win. In fairness, how entertaining is it to read review after review about minivans, econoboxes, and Mom's SUV? It's a great medium to read a well written account of the driving experience in a Ferrari, Porsche, or Lamborgini. Since this is the closest most of us will ever get to being behind the wheel of one of those beauties, it makes for a great read. I also give them a thumbs up for keeping an eye on near-future developments like hybrids and diesels, and not going ga-ga over pie-in-the-sky long-range alt. fuel solutions.

A Car Mag With a Sense of Humour on September 01, 2008 by vikast from LA, CA

  • Pros: Great coverage of cars; funny
  • Cons: Advertiser friendly, so there are no negative reviews

I like the way this magazine is written. If Automobile is the Architectural Digest of car magazines, then Car and Driver is the Maxim of Car Magazines. They clearly have a sense of humour (e.g., their breaking news is called the Information Dirt Road, since the internet is the information super highway). They also tend to cover a large variety of cars. Since C&D, R&T, MT, and Automobile all rely on automotive advertising, all of these magazines tend to publish reviews that are friendly toward manufacturers.
