Long on promises and short on delivery on January 05, 2012 by Interested in Expat from Northwest, US

  • Pros: Just enough information to dream
  • Cons: Paying for short articles that are to up-sell you

I have been receiving International living for over 6 months now, and frankly it is frustrating, because most of the articles are short on content and only give you about half the info you want. I constantly receive emails trying to get me to pay for seminars, which run into thousands of dollars, and promotional stuff on individual countries that costs $100+. I will not be re-newing my subscription when it is up. It seems like if you are paying $40 or $50 a year the publisher should not be holding back content and using the magazine just to upsell. I get enough advertising and promotions without needing to pay for it. Also International living doesn't tell you any of the negatives. They are pushing retirement in Columbia, Belize mainland, Brazil and Mexico, but these countries are just not that safe, and most people would have security concerns. I have spent time in Mexico and Belize, so I know what I am talking about. We know people that live in Belize on the mainland and the wife is afraid to go anywhere at night, because women are often raped and the murder rate is higher than Washington DC.

I'm surprised on May 30, 2011 by Freddi from California

I've been getting IL for several years and love it. Each time I receive the magazine I ask myself why I'm not fulfilling my dream of moving to another country and living for a lot less money in a very comfortable lifestyle. It'll happen within the next few years. I don't receive any other emails from IL, so I guess I checked the box that said 'no thanks' when I signed up. I've learned so much from IL about different countries, I can't imagine not liking it. Where else can you get this info for $49 a year? Most people aren't aware of the large ex-pat population that lives outside the US and on a limited budget. Yes, it costs money to buy real estate in another country, but the deals are better than in the US and you can certainly rent in these places. IL is fact filled, lots of connections, and amazing.

Travel Lite on September 24, 2010 by Beenthere from Pacific

  • Pros: interesting at first
  • Cons: repetitive and shallow

International Living magazine is a nice $12 dollar value. They promote about 6 places over and over. Wordy. The real purpose seems to be a front to lead you to expensive seminars, and hopefully to ring in some big spenders for their investment schemes. Be wary.

Warning! on September 18, 2010 by W.T. from U.S.

  • Pros: Good bird cage liner
  • Cons: Grifter attitude

I subscribed a year ago to International Living magazine and saw that the magazine was a forum to sell so I guess that I am paying to be blasted with sales offers that are obviously in the magazine's interests. Now, I will be canceling.
