An Excellent Guide to Living on March 09, 2007
by TC

Today's Black Woman is a surprisingly underrated guide to living. I initially perused this magazine at Walmart, then uncharacteristically bought a TWO year subscription after experiencing its worth. The advisors/advice columnists are not only certified experts in their fields, they are grounded, wise and solution-oriented. The magazine might appeal to 18-24 year olds because of the relationship-oriented articles, celebrity cover models and career-building advice. However, it also reaches the 50+ demographic with solid advice on how to combat the curveballs in life, such as gender/wage discrimination and financial setbacks of divorce. Good advice does not need to be tailored to an audience, and it helps guide anyone inexperienced from stumbling through solutions. TBW smartly offers both instruction (which appeals to the 16-24 demographic) and perspective (which reaches the 50+ demographic). Although it does use images of beauty in the form of flat abs and figure-forming clothing (appealing to the younger, body-conscious audience), the advice columns raise this magazine's caliber above fluff. I'll continue to enjoy TBW as a magazine offering a quick peek into the world of well-considered decision making.
