Biased on August 16, 2011 by Liz from Colorado/Arizona

  • Pros: holistic, forward-thinking, in-depth articles, meant to be kept/collected, many topics
  • Cons: too biased and opinionated, expected more advanced articles

I like how the magazine has three hole punches for permanent storage, and refers the reader to back-issued articles (if you have them) for more info on the current topic. Though it is more expensive than other dog magazines, the price is actually kept quite low when you consider they don't get money from endorsements and adds. The articles are also in-depth and longer, which I prefer and enjoy. What I was disappointed to find is that for a journal the articles on many topics weren't more advanced...meaning they still catered to the average dog owner. It's still good info and readers can learn from it, but too basic for me. Also, even though the average reader could learn some good info, I'm not sure that I would recommend it because a lot of the info is very opinionated and not objective or strictly factual enough. For example, theories on dominance, leadership, or pack mentality were incomplete and one-sided. Again, for a journal I found this disappointing. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a ranting blog with an us vs. them tone, and the writing had too much presence of the author. You may be wondering why I put 5 stars for add relevance when the magazine is void of filler adds...this is because when product reviews are covered and researched (such as dog food) the products pertain to the article and have some good info. It's not a bad magazine, but I would advise to take some articles with a grain of salt and do some of your own research.

Whole Dog Journal on March 08, 2010 by blaze from NC

  • Pros: It's the best magazine for dog related information
  • Cons: None

Whole Dog Journal magazine is very informative. I have learned so much from it in regards to health issues, best foods, holistic approaches and training. This is my 4th year receiving this magazine and I really enjoy reading it and receiving it every month.

Disappointed on March 05, 2010 by Holisticcatldogs from Buckeye State

  • Pros: Holistic approach, variety of topics covered
  • Cons: Very basic information

Many holistic dog owners thought I should read Whole Dog Journal magazine. The subscription was highly priced, but I ordered it anyway. The information, content, & layout disappointed me. The articles seemed extremely basic and provided little new information. I'm still hoping that future issues (only have read 2) delight me.
