Among Us Women by Joan Lerner is an exciting read. It's about coping with tragedy and empowerment. Three women of different ages and ethnicity become embroiled on opposing sides of the abortion controversy. One of the women, a grandmother, suffers from depression after her husband commits suicide. She seeks comfort (and romance) with a preacher who convinces her that saving babies about to be arborted will be her salvation. She joins an activist pro-life group. A chapter takes place at an abortion protest in Wichita, Kansas where Dr. George Tiller was targeted and murdered recently. There is an African American interior designer who has an abortion after her married Caucasian lover insists. And the third woman, nearing 40, is desperate for a baby as her husband confesses that he is gay and is leaving her for a man. A devastating event occurs which involves them all. The novel culminates in a courtroom drama.
