About Seventeen

Seventeen was first launched in 1944 and was the first magazine with editorial just for teenagers. Walter Annenberg was the founder of Seventeen and also founded TV Guide in 1953. It is currently published by Hearst corporation, which is the publisher of Cosmopolitan and Redbook. The pages of Seventeen cover the topics teenage women are interested in: fashion, beauty, health, relationships and more. Readers will find latest fashion trends, with tips for dressing for different body types and creating a personal style. Seventeen also offers hair, make-up and beauty advice, featuring bargain products. The magazine also focuses on health, with articles on body image, medical news, diet and fitness techniques. The "Real Life" section offers advice regarding relationships with friends, family and guys, as well as relevant personal and social issues for women age 15 to 21. J-14 and Teen Vogue are other available magazines for teenage women.

I got my first Seventeen magazine subscription for free and I'm glad I didn't have to pay cause I'd totally ask for my money back. The articles are odd. (Ex.: How to have the perfect summer fling and best kissing tips; yeah...right) Don't even get me started on some of the fashions.

I NEVER Thought We Would Cancel This Mag

Cons

  • Bad Articles
  • Poorly Written Articles
  • Propaganda

Best Uses

Having read Seventeen in my teens I got this for my daughter who is a teen. She liked it at first, as did I, because there seemed to be some questionable stuff, but there was a very small balance with more than one point of view- or so we thought.

With each issue, however, there was a blatant slanting of articles about lifestyle choices that were clearly not written by teens or even those in early 20s. These articles were heavily promoting their point of view with aggressiveness that does not belong in this magazine.

Not only did my daughter ask me to cancel it, but my older son and husband happened to grab a copy and both remarked on how awful it was and how they could not believe the propaganda in there.

Seventeen used to be about fashion, questions about all kinds of things that are interesting to teen girls, and fun trends, interesting articles, etc. Now it still has a little bit of that, but is clearly more pointed at aggressive propaganda to recruit more girls toward alternative lifestyles and not celebrate who they are as healthy teen girls.

We canceled this magazine.

Are u parents actually opening this magazine? Did u see the section abt the questions kids may be asking?? [*]???? Yes that is what 17 put in their magazine! I for one would NEVER let my kids look at this magazine. EVER! It is disgusting and people should be punished for subjecting our kids minds to this!

My daughter is 16 and loves getting this magazine. She likes the fashion and make up reviews. There are no inappropriate articles that other magazines gear towards the college aged girls. The articles are age appropriate.

While my seventeen year old daughter enjoys it, often some of the themes and more often the ads are a bit too mature. In addition, my fourteen year old likes to read it, and it is usually too mature for her.

I love Seventeen magazine, but one thing I've noticed about their hair ads is that they don't give much info on how to make your hair look like it!

Seventeen Magazine Subcription Video Review

Hey there. I'm Kara Gause. I’m a full-time blogger and a full-time mom of twin girls. Which means I’m tired already!

I know I’m not exactly the target demographic for Seventeen magazine, but teaching teenagers for eight years kind of made it a staple for me. You know, getting into the mind of your “target customer,” so to speak. I think it's a great tool for parents. What are they talking about? What on earth is making them dress that way What music are they listening to? What are the favorite bands?

And it’s also wild to look back at a magazine you used to read as a kid -- see how it’s changed. A bit of a guilty pleasure, really. Reminds me of how I used to feel as a teenage girl. All my insecurities. I remember wanting to look like the girls in Seventeen, dress like them. Can’t imagine that’s changed for girls.

One feature of the magazine that is totally the same is all of those quizzes. “Is he cheating on you?” "Do you have an eating disorder?" “Does your BFF have your back?” It’s all totally self-indulgent and Narcissistic, but that’s where the mind of a teen is. It’s a time of self-discovery. Seventeen helps draw that out.

If you’re looking for a gift subscription for a teenager then I definitely suggest checking out the current Seventeen magazine subscription deals at Magazines.com.
