I've been skating for twenty three years and I honestly believe The Skateboard Mag is the best skate magazine written to date.

Adult Expressions in Youth Activities

By Young Hipster

from Oklahoma

The Skateboard Mag is owned by skateboard photographer Atiba Jefferson. The magazine was published in order that Atiba might reach an older audience. Though teenagers are the ones usually putting their grubby paws on the MAG, the writers are usually more concerned with the culture and art involved with skateboarding rather than the partying or the sometimes 'distasteful' lifestyles included in the skateboarding world. In the MAG you'll read much about the older generation of skateboarders. You'll of course see the advertisements that were more than less, targeted towards young and mid-ranged teenagers. Be warned, you parents of the more cautious-type, that the interviews of professionals and amateurs may contain offensive language. Not every skateboarder is a partier but some are and some of those guys end up in the MAG every now and then. If you're worried about your kid reading one of these interviews, I suppose you could totally shelter them from culture, but sooner or later they're going to hear those words and find out what some people do with their spare time, so my advice would be to warn them of that lifestyle. Not in a harsh way, but just let them know that you don't have to live that way in order to become a great skateboarder. The MAG will deal with everything around the skateboarding culture. It often speaks of it as an expression of art. Those who read will be up to date with the latest shoe models, changes in teams and will also receive videos every so often just because Atiba's that nice of a guy. Enjoy skateboarding.

Offensive

By Disgusted Mom

from Batesville, AR

My 16 year old son loves skateboarding. For one of his Christmas presents this past year, he asked to receive Skateboarder Magazine. Reluctantly, we ordered the magazine under the suspicion that there might be SOME offensive language and life stlyes in it. We assumed this because of the unfortunate "bad boy" image that some skaters, not all, give the sport. My husband and I are Christians who make an effort to shield ourselves and our children from unneccessary "evils" such as cursing, etc.. But we do live in the "real world" and realize that it is impossible to shield them and ourselves from all such things. Like I said, we expected that there would be a few words and a few life styles that we wouldn't approve of but chose to allow our son as a Christian young man to filter through these things on his own. However, about a month ago, one of your magazines came in the mail and I decided to thumb through it. In the back of the magazine was a photo of a young girl who appeared to be naked but was covered with some metal items in order to cover up her private areas. The photo is very provocative and suggestive. I was offeneded by this picture and decided to take a closer look at the magazine. I began to read interviews of various skaters. I was very disgusted and irritated! Curse word after curse word, interview after interview. Oh, your editors, on extreme words, omitted middle letters leaving only the first and last letters of the words used by the skater being interviewed. But come on! Do you really think that the words don't still ring in the heads of the young people who read the interviews? Needless to say, I didn't give the magazine to my son and waited on the next issue to arrive. I haven't been able to scan the entire magazine yet, but I have seen enough! I will not be renewing my son's subscription to Skateboarder Magazine and I will let others know what I think of your magazine. Maybe Skateboarder Magazine condones this type of language, maybe it sees that it has no other choice, I don't know. But as I see it, you do have a choice as to the standards you set for your magazine. It is well known that most, not all, athletes choose to use inappropriate language, but when the majority of them are being interviewed they refrain from using bad language or they are at least asked to refrain while doing the interview. It seems to me that you can require the same out of the skaters. If they want their interview in your magazine (who wouldn't want to have the opportunity for their life story appear in a magazine?) they should have to tone down their language and refrain from using such offensive language. I believe that some would when asked to and I believe you should ask them to. Please, will you do something about it? Just think, you might even be able to help improve the overall image of skaters, if that matters to you.
