  • Pros: Nice general interest mag for knowledge hounds
  • Cons: May be too nerdy for some

I've been getting the magazine for years. It has changed little in terms of its overall quality. Since some of the content draws on the Smithsonian itself, those articles greatly benefit from the vast wealth of material in that collection. A good choice for history or science buffs.

I had been a subscriber of Smithsonian magazine for over 20 years. Then they decided to change their layout. They should have stuck with what worked. The ads are confusing as well as the beginning of a new article. You can't tell at a glance whether you are viewing a new article or just another ad. Sometimes when you think you are turning a page with an ad on it, it is actually a beginning of a new article. And the content page is a few pages in instead of being at the beginning. They must have hired some kid fresh out of college who thought had some new ideas to update the magazine. They need to make the magazine user-friendly like it used to be. I hated ending my subscription but it was just too frustrating to read.

  • Pros: No revisionist stories... Tells it like it is and was.
  • Cons: Lots of ads stuffed in the spine... Very annoying

I've been a 20+ year subscriber to Smithsonian magazine and I've learned more science, history, geography and sociology than I ever read in a schoolbook in depth coverage of all their articles is superb. Of all the gifts my kids and grand kids get during the year this tops the list.
