About Essence Magazine

Essence magazine is an inspirational magazine for African-American women that encourages them to lead bold, fulfilling lives.

First published in 1970 as primarily a fashion magazine, Essence has evolved to cover beauty tips, lifestyle topics, relationship advice, and social issues in the African-American community. Now each issue is considered monthly celebration of the African-American woman's experience, dedicated to encouraging her passions and dreams. Magazine covers feature celebrities, occasionally men, but most often black women.

Aside from the features in every issue, content in the magazine is organized in these sections: "Style," "Beauty&Hair," "News&Culture," "Sex&Love," "Work&Wealth," and "Body&Spirit."
